One thing is for certain, Asheville’s reputation is growing as a food and beverage destination. Through the support and guidance of hospitality organizations like the Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) and their Foodtopian Society, residents and tourists alike will benefit from the grassroots efforts of 17 active farmers’ markets and over 250 independent restaurants, as they strive to meet a growing demand for local sourcing and production.

 

Asheville Independent Restaurants – Supporting Local Asheville NC Dining

One organization close to our heart is the Asheville Independent Restaurant Association (AIR) which offers marketing, sponsorship and membership opportunities for local restaurant owners to meet and discuss latest industry trends. AIR is Asheville's most influential organization for independent and local restaurants. Their mission is to “unite the independent restaurant community of Asheville NC as committed to local people, local philanthropies, local businesses, local food and the local economy, with a promise to preserve the authenticity of our mountain home through genuine food and signature hospitality.” AIR offers Asheville's Independent Restaurants a single meeting platform for organizing and advocating Asheville’s food and beverage industry. One example of this is the annual Taste of Asheville - a public event where influencers and public figures get together to celebrating Asheville dining achievements from the past year.

 

The Future of Asheville NC Dining

With the rising demand for gluten-free options ($2.5 billion in global sales for 2010, Euromonitor International) AIR teams up with the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness (NFCA) for positioning Asheville as the most Gluten-Free friendly city in the nation. Beginning with training from the National Foundation for Celiac Awareness on April 28, 2011, more and more restaurants will have the opportunity to promote their own gluten-free options and receive training for best practices in preparation and sourcing gluten-free cuisine.
