Food for Thought: Burrata Cheese

Summer begs for lighter, fresher meals that don’t weigh you down. We’ve been loving the addition of burrata to some of our dishes for this reason. However, many people aren’t familiar with the little slice of heaven known as burrata. We’re here to explain your new favorite ingredient!

What is Burrata?

Burrata is a fresh, semi-soft Italian cheese. It consists of a mozzarella casing filled with thick cream. Literally translating to “buttered”, burrata has a creamy texture and rich-yet-mild flavor that pairs perfectly with most summer vegetables.

What’s the difference between Burrata and Mozzarella?

Burrata and mozzarella are both semi-soft Italian cheeses, and burrata is made using mozzarella – but burrata is definitely a very special type of cheese on its own! To make burrata, fresh mozzarella is formed into a hollow pouch and then filled with soft curd and fresh cream. It is not as dense or tangy as mozzarella cheese.

Use It at Home

Burrata is a show-stopper and can give many dishes that extra oomph! We recommend pairing the fresh cheese with heirloom tomatoes and balsamic vinegar for a summer salad that is beautiful AND delicious. Our Tomato Burrata Salad recipe is available online.
